PT PLN (Persero) has prepared a number of strategies to support the achievement of net zero emissions (NZE) in 2060. At least, there are eight steps taken by PLN to achieve this target.

"One of our initiatives is to fight this net zero emissions," said PLN Risk Management Director Suroso Isnandar, in Sarinah, Jakarta, Tuesday, September 17.

The first strategy, continued Suroso, was to cancel 13,300 new Megawatts (MW) of Steam Power Plants (PLTU) planned in the previous plan to provide electricity (RUPTL), namely for the period 2019 to 2028.

According to Suroso, this step will cut emissions by 1.8 billion tons of CO2. Then, the second strategy is to cancel power purchase agreements (PPA) or electricity purchase agreements for 1,400 MW.

"It's been a power purchase agreement agreement to buy electricity from PLN but it hasn't been built yet, we immediately brake, friends stop first. So that the cancellation of PPA 1,400 MW PLTU is in the 2021 to 2030 RUPTL and it is a strong signal that we are committed to reducing emissions," he explained.

The third strategy, continued Suroso, is to replace the 1,100 MW PLTU which is already operating with a new renewable energy plant (EBT). Meanwhile, the fourth strategy is to replace the 800 MW PLTU which has been operated with a gas plant.

Then, continued Suroso, the fifth strategy prepared by PLN is to encourage the use of biomass for coal mixtures as fuel for PLTU or co-firing.

"That's what we do co-firing at 46 PLTU and later this will be 52 PLTU 2025," he said.

The sixth strategy, he continued, was to accelerate it by replacing diesel power plants (PLTD) with new and renewable energy.

"First of all, there are more than 90 remote locations whose diesel is turned off and replaced with an EBT generator," he said.

Seventh, he continued, PLN encourages the implementation of carbon trading. Meanwhile, the latest strategy is that PLN will develop a massive EBT plant.

The latter is the gong. We are developing a large number of EBT developers at least 21 gigawatts in the greenest RUPTL," he said.
