JAKARTA - PT Semen Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (SIG) is increasingly showing its commitment to supporting sustainable development by developing green cement innovations and its environmentally friendly derivative products, as a form of support for the government in leading to a sustainable construction industry.

This green cement development initiative also received positive appreciation from the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) during a visit to the GIS Research Center Building, in the context of sharing knowledge about the company's research and innovation activities through the GIS Research & Development Department, on Wednesday, August 21.

Socia Prihawantoro, a researcher at the BRIN Center for Climate and Atmospheric Research, stated that GIS' efforts to develop green cement are a strategic step that is very much needed at this time. He considered that green cement is a concrete solution in facing the challenges of global climate change.

"The green cement is the answer to the threat of global climate change. Although the public may not yet fully realize the importance of using green cement, its impact on the environment is considered very significant," said Socia Prihawantoro.

Socia Prihawantoro added that the negative impact of climate change, such as increasing the earth's temperature and rising sea level, may not be felt directly by the community. However, over time, this effect will be increasingly felt and a serious threat to the survival of living things.

"By reducing CO2 emissions through the use of environmentally friendly green cement, GIS has taken important steps to protect the earth from more severe damage," he added.

According to him, SIG is one of the pioneers in the material building industry that focuses on the production of green cement.

"We haven't heard of any other cement companies that have innovations like this. GIS really takes the lead in efforts to preserve the environment for future generations," said Socia Prihawantoro.

Meanwhile, Operations Director of SIG Reni Wulandari said, as a leading building material solutions provider, SIG realizes that the role of the cement industry is vital in infrastructure development, but also contributes significant carbon emissions. Therefore, GIS is committed to reducing the environmental impact of its operations by presenting green cement, which is designed to produce lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional cement (OPC), without reducing product quality and strength.

"The green cement developed by GIS is designed to produce lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional cement, so it is recorded that 21-38 percent is lower in carbon. This advantage makes GIS's green cement the right choice to support sustainable development, including in the construction of the Nusantara Capital (IKN) mega project that carries a sustainable concept," said Reni Wulandari.
