Coordinating Minister Airlangga: The Number Of Indonesian Startups Ranks 6th Globally, In ASEAN Ranked Top

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said the number of startups in Indonesia was ranked 6th highest globally.

However, within the ASEAN region, Indonesia is ranked 1st as the country with the highest number of startups, namely 2,647 startups.

"Our number of startups is ranked 6th globally and we are even higher than Germany," said Airlangga during the Opening Ceremony of the X Karya Kreatif Indonesia (KKI) Digital Economy and Finance (FEKDI) 2024 in Jakarta, quoted from Antara, Thursday, August 1.

Airlangga said that currently Indonesia has 15 startups that are already unicorn and 2 decacorns. According to him, the number of startups is increasingly reflecting the progress of the country to be able to compete in digital economic competition.

He noted that the country with the highest number of startups is currently still occupied by the United States (US) with 80,612 startups, then India with 17,043 startups, followed by Britain with 7,325 startups.

Based on World Digital Competitivenes, Indonesia's competitiveness also recorded an increase of 11 places to 45th position in 2023. This, continued Airlangga, became a separate progress considering that previously, Indonesia's competitiveness ranking was still stuck in 56th position in 2019.

Meanwhile, Indonesia is also ranked 2nd as a digital investment destination in the Southeast Asia region in 2023.

Airlangga said that investment in Indonesia's digital economy has reached 22 billion US dollars in 2023. Although still lagging behind Singapore, which has absorbed 141 billion US dollars in investment, Indonesia has surpassed Vietnam and Malaysia, which recorded 18 billion US dollars and 17 billion US dollars, respectively.

"For our digital investment purposes, the second largest is investment destinations, approaching 22 billion US dollars after Singapore. Singapore became a hub because it divided, but Indonesia (invested) really entered us in 2023," he said.
