PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) ensures its readiness to accommodate the growth of the liquefied natural gas (LNG) market as the demand for environmentally friendly energy continues to grow.

Director of Gas, Petrochemical & New Business PIS Arief Sukmara said there was significant growth in LNG demand worldwide, especially in the Asia Pacific region.

"It is estimated that there is an additional need for 193 gas carriers to meet LNG demand growth of 5 percent every year until 2033. This means that it will grow from 412 million tons per year (mtpa) in 2023 to 666 mtpa in 2033. In other words, the industry will need 27 to 28 new LNG carriers every year for the next 10 years," said Arief in his statement, in Jakarta, quoted from Antara, Friday, July 26.

LNG has proven to be an alternative source of energy with lower emission from other energy sources. Moreover, these commodities also have an important role in supporting the energy transition.

Therefore, PIS is preparing to enter the LNG market by owning an LNG carrier. Arief called PIS's capacity and portfolio as a logistics maritime company in the international market a strong capital for PIS to contribute to efforts to provide environmentally friendly energy.

"As a company committed to being one of the leadings in the world and an estimated revenue of up to USD 6 billion by 2030, we want to contribute to the supply of LNG clean energy in Asia Pacific," said Arief.

In fulfilling its commitment to maintaining national energy security, PIS also continues to build other fleets and infrastructure needed.

Currently, PIS continues to add a fleet of ships that support environmentally friendly energy logistics. PIS now has seven units of very large gas carriers (VLGC) that have dual-fuel technology, making them more environmentally friendly. Overall, the PIS fleet has been operating on more than 60 international routes.

PIS is a subsidiary of PT Pertamina (Persero) which was founded in 2016. In 2021, PIS was appointed as the parent of the Subholding Integrated Marine Logistics (SH IML) which organizes all shipping, marine, and logistics businesses.
