Tanjung Uban Terminal Ready To Become An Energy Hub Trading In Southeast Asia

PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS), Sub-Holding Integrated Marine Logistics (SH IML) PT Pertamina (Persero), said that the Integrated Terminal Tanjung Uban performance in Bintan, Riau Islands, continues to increase and is ready to become a trading hub in Southeast Asia.

PIS Finance Director Diah Kurniawati in her statement in Jakarta, Wednesday, July 24, said that since the transfer of logistics handover points from abroad to domestic or supplier head stock (SHS), the number of cargo from the terminal managed by PT Pertamina Energy Terminal (PET), a subsidiary of PIS, has continued to increase.

The strategic terminal position near the Malacca Strait, previously only managed the distribution of fuel and LPG on the island of Sumatra and the western part of Kalimantan Island.

Through the SHS program which began in 2002, there were 13 SHS cargo receipts with a capacity of 4.83 million barrels.

The next phase at the end of 2023 to July 2024 is 18 ships with a capacity of 5.3 million barrels.

The increase in the performance and operations of the strategic terminal was confirmed directly by PIS Finance Director Diah Kurniawati during a series of management walkthrough (MWT) visits to Tanjung Uban, Thursday (18/7/2024).

"Integrated Tanjung Uban Terminal with a Bonded Logistics Center (PLB) status is an advantage for SH IML. With better facilities and strategic positions it becomes a global customer attraction. Of course, this is in line with SH IML's plan and strategy to develop a non-captive market," said Diah, as reported by Antara.

Various upgrades from PETs over the past few years have made terminals have a throughput rate of 8,715 kiloliters/day for fuel oil and 2,693 metric tons/day for LPG with a total of 200ship calls per month.

In the future, Diah added that in SHS's 2025-2028 plan, the terminal will be positioned as a trading hub for foreign and domestic consumers.

One of these is done by maximizing the blending facility for gasoline products, so that they can manage 2-3 components at once in one tank.

PIS Risk Management Director Muhamad Resa added that as part of risk mitigation, the Tanjung Uban Integrated Terminal has also been equipped with a buffer zone as a safe distance between operational areas and residential areas along the 1,675 m.

The buffer zone contains forests and swamps covering an area of 205 hectares or 83 percent of the area.

PET has also installed 18 lightning protection systems in all operational areas.

"We apply this variety of safety measures considering the vital role of Integrated Tanjung Uban Terminal as a buffer for national energy security. This is also a form of PIS support for workers' welfare with global HSSE standards, which were achieved in 2023 with zero fatality and 40.5 million safe working hours," said Diah. Integrated Tanjung Uban Terminal has an area of more than 250 hectares with a storage capacity of 402,413 kiloliters for fuel oil and 93,500 metric tons for LPG.

Through seven piers that can accommodate ships measuring between 600,000 to 100,000 DWT, the distribution of fuel oil, and LPG to other cargo can be carried out efficiently.

Integrated Tanjung Uban Terminal is one of six strategic energy terminals managed by PIS through PET. Other terminals are the LPG Refrigerated Tanjung Sekong Terminal (Banten), the Sambu Island Fuel Terminal (Riau Islands), the Kotabaru Fuel Terminal (South Kalimantan), the Baubau Fuel Terminal ( Southeast Sulawesi), and the Refrigerated Tuban LPG Terminal (East Java).
