Ministry Of Industry Reveals Japan To China Interested In Involvement In EV Business In Indonesia

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) revealed that a number of international parties ranging from Japan to China are interested in being involved in the electric vehicle (EV) business in Indonesia.

"Indonesia's involvement is actually for apart from raw materials for electric vehicle batteries, several international parties have come to us (Kemenperin) to participate in the EV business in Indonesia, namely Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and China," said Director of International Industrial Resources and Promotion Access (ASDIPI) Directorate General of Regional Resilience and Access to the National Industry of the Ministry of Industry, Syahroni Ahmad, as reported by ANTARA, Friday, July 12.

According to the man who is familiarly called Roni, the government's EV is intensively promoting investment opportunities in Indonesia's EVs, especially after an import policy from the United States raised up to 100 percent import duty for EV products from China, as well as Europe, which increased it to 37 percent of EV import duties from China.

As the main producer of EVs, China plans to produce EVs in other countries including Turkey and Indonesia.

Several Chinese companies have also entered Indonesia.

"If China wants to produce electric cars and electric motorbikes directly. Then from Japan, we with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) conducted a survey on electric vehicle batteries, especially two-wheeled vehicles, so that later they can be recycled, but Japan is still just a survey and has not yet decided which company will enter," said Roni.

With South Korea (South Korea), the Ministry of Industry has carried out with Busan Techno Park who wants to create a center to verify or check EV batteries.

Then with the Taiwanese side related to the global value chain (GVC) where Indonesia plays a role there.

"If Taiwan wants to enter Indonesia, it has built a factory in the Batam industrial area. Hopefully in September it can be produced, and later for its launch in August it will invite the Minister of Industry," said Roni.

The factory in Batam is for recycling electric batteries, where the batteries are destroyed for cobalt, lithium, and nickel to be resold to electric battery companies.

"So for EVs, Indonesia plays a very important role there. Indeed, for EVs we play a lot of roles, especially for electric vehicle batteries," said Roni.
