JAKARTA - PT Pelindo Petikes Terminal (SPTP) is expanding a new market with global shipping companies through the use of the Makassar New Port (MNP) facility in South Sulawesi for loading and unloading activities.

TPK New Makassar Head Terminal I Nyoman Sutrisna in a statement received in Surabaya, East Java, Wednesday, said the interested global shipping companies namely CMA-CGM and Maersk Line, which made field visits to MNP some time ago.

"CMA-CGM and Maersk Line have expressed interest in their activities at MNP, they are currently exploring the market to see the potential for import export cargo that they can bring from Makassar," he said as quoted by ANTARA, Wednesday, June 26.

He said that his party is optimistic that the two shipping companies will carry out activities at MNP because the facilities they have are very sufficient, one of which has a depth of flow and a port pool of up to minus 16 meters Low Water Springs (LWS).

"With this depth, it is possible for large post padamax-generation ships that are usually used for direct calls or direct shipping abroad to enter MNP," he said.

In addition, he continued, it was also supported by six quay container crane units with a total pier length of 1,600 meters.

"The terminal area reaches 52 hectares with a container capacity of 2.5 million per year," he said.

Nyoman added, in the Makassar area, PT Pelindo Petikes Terminal manages two terminals, namely Makassar Container Terminal or Makassar New Port or Terminal 2.

"The number of container flows in the two terminals in 2023 reached 700,000 TEUS. For 2024, his party is targeting the flow of 715,000 TEUS containers," he said.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the DPW Association of Indonesian Logistics & Forwarders (ALFI) South and West Sulawesi (Sulselbar) Syaifuddin Syahrudi said he was optimistic that a number of commodities in South Sulawesi could grow so that they could meet export needs.

Ipho as he is familiarly called hopes that the existence of MNP can make South Sulawesi a hub for Eastern Indonesia for logistics distribution.

"Hopefully in the future MNP will become a hub in Eastern Indonesia, there will be no need to go to Java (Jakarta and Surabaya)," he said.

Ipho said, to support MNP as a hub, there needs to be a more massive economic and industrial center.

"With the current analysis of economic growth and population in South Sulawesi, a number of commodities for basic necessities are still imported from Java," he said.
