JAKARTA - Minister of Investment and Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Bahlil Lahadalia revealed that the Nahdhatul Ulama (PBNU) Executive Board, which is the largest religious organization, will receive the largest mining concession land. The land to be managed is land that was once managed by PT Ktim Prima Coal (KPC), a subsidiary of Bakrie Group.

Quoted from its official website, the KPC was founded in 1970 by Rio Tinto Indonesia which is owned by Conzinc Rio Tinto Australia in collaboration with British Petroleum (BP) to collaborate in coal exploration activities in Indonesia.

Then in 1978, the Indonesian government invited foreign companies to join coal exploration tender activities in East Kalimantan and South Kalimantan and in 1982 PT Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) signed a Coal Work Contract (CCoW) with Perum Tambang Batu, now known as PT Tambang Bara Bukit Asam (PTBA) representing the Indonesian Government.

It is known that the contract agreement includes exploration, production and marketing activities. Then in 1982-1986 KPC carried out comprehensive exploration activities in the contract area.

In 1989, the KPC began carrying out construction construction activities with a total investment of 570 million US dollars and mining activities began in June 1990.

Furthermore, in 1991 trials were carried out on main projects which included crushing, coal prepared plant, overland conveyor, stakeholder, reclaimer, and shiploader. In the same year, KPC started shipping more than 2.1 million tons of coal.

Then in 1992, the KPC shipped more than 7.3 million tons of coal, surpassing the KPC's production capacity which was originally set at 7 million tons of coal per year.

Until 2003 the KPC was acquired by PT Bumi Resources Tbk and continued to grow with a production capacity of 16.4 million tons of coal, and then reached 56.97 million tons in 2017.

In 2017, the KPC also started operating a steam power plant with a capacity of 3times18 MW. Power Plants (PLTU) with a capacity of 1x18 MW support the electrification of people in East Kutai.

Reporting from Minerba One Data Indonesia (MODI) of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), currently KPC has a mining area of 61,543 ha which is valid until December 31, 2031.
