JAKARTA - Harry Susilo Institute for Ethics in the Global Economy held its first global case competition final on Friday 3 0 May 2024 at Bimasena, Dharmawangsa Hotel, Jakarta, Indonesia.

Supported by Sekar Group, especially the mining sector of PT Ifishdeco Tbk (IFSH.JK), this competition features 6 finalist teams representing several countries that will present solutions to the nickel mining issue.

Gregory L. Stoller, Senior Lecturer, Boston University, said more than 70 teams from 16 countries competed for one year. Among them are Albania, China, Georgia, Germany, Ghana, Hong Kong, Hungary, Indonesia, Ireland, Japan, Kenya, Lebanon, Mexico, Portugal and Spain.

After going through a series of preliminary rounds, 6 finalists were selected who left for Indonesia.

"Finalists from Germany, Japan, the United States, Mexico, Lebanon, and Indonesia traveled to Jakarta to present their proposal to the panel of judges who will choose the overall winner," he said.

The material for the Susilo Institute Global Case Competition was developed by PT Ifishdeco Tbk (IFSH.JK) based on the following concept:

The nickel mine has grown globally, especially in Indonesia, along with rising renewable energy and demand for batteries for electric vehicles. However, nickel mining poses environmental and social challenges including soil, water, and air pollution as well as disturbances to the local community.

The case developed by Ifishdeco asked the team to explore issues such as environmental, social, and governance impacts as well as mitigation, remediation, and rehabilitation efforts for mining in Indonesia. The team will also consider recycling options for nickel batteries at the end of its life.

Ryanong Jaya, Commissioner of PT Ifishdeco Tbk is also one of the panelist judges of the event, adding that the main goal of this competition is to hear the ideas of students that can be implemented in the company, including Ifishdeco. Ryan stated that if these ideas can be implemented, the company will invest and implement the best ESG practices.

"This is expected to make Ifishdeco an example for other national mining companies in implementing the ESG practice," he explained.

This event also involved a team from ITB, which is expected to attract more students' interest in the mining sector and help find solutions in this field. The mining sector is one of the big contributors to state revenue and is important for the long term of the government, especially in terms of downstreaming promoted by the Indonesian government.

Ryan explained that Ifishdeco's goal of being involved in this event was to promote awareness of issues in the mining sector, especially nickel. As a company that has an IPO in 2019, Ifishdeco is now more focused on good mining practices, providing benefits to the community, and protecting the environment. They want to create a sustainable, balanced industry between profitability and social and environmental responsibilities.

Through this competition, Ifishdeco hopes to learn from student ideas that have been studied abroad and find solutions that can be implemented in Indonesia. Each region has different needs and environments, so the right solutions must be adjusted to local conditions," he said.

Of the 6 finalists, only two teams with the best idea will be chosen as winners. The first winner in this competition was won by the Lebanese team, namely from the American University of Beirut. While the second winner was won by the German team from Baden -Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University (DHBW Loerrach).

Ifishdeco plans to implement these best ideas as a pilot project in the company. With a partnership with universities, Ifishdeco hopes to do more research and provide students with the opportunity to put forward their ideas, as well as promote concern for ESG," Ryan said.

He emphasized that this event is not only about competition, but also about learning, innovating, and preparing for the future of a better and more sustainable mining industry in Indonesia.
