JAKARTA - Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy (Menparekraf) Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno said the Indonesian tourism index rose to 22nd place from the previous 32nd position. This is based on the Travel and Tourism Development Index (TTDI) report issued by the World Economic Forum on May 21, 2024.

"Our tourism index is already number 22, up 10 places. We are above Belgium, New Zealand and Turkey," Sandiaga said at The Weekly Brief with Sandi Uno in Jakarta, Monday, May 27.

Even so, Sandiaga did not deny that the position of Indonesian tourism in the Southeast Asia (ASEAN) region was still not at the top. Because, currently the first position is still held by Singapore.

Meanwhile, in the Asian continent region, the Indonesian tourism index competes with three countries, namely South Korea, Japan and China.

"In Asean we are number two, we are in world number 22. Far above our target, thank God. So, I am very proud because this time we are targeting only to enter position 29, but we are heading towards the top 20," he said.

According to Sandiaga, there are at least three things that will increase the Indonesian tourism index this year, namely how the government prioritizes its policies to support tourism, build destinations and provide policies such as collective holidays.

"This turns out to make us more successful in leaving Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines far away," he said.

Furthermore, he considered that there was still homework to be done to continue to improve the quality of tourism in the country. Such as improving infrastructure, serving tourists (tourist service) as well as improving aspects of cleanliness and health.

"And this brilliant ranking we must not be complacent because the World Economic Forum assesses it every two years. We need to build infrastructure and tourism services," he added.
