Nuclear Power Plants Are In Sight, PLN NP Will Collaborate With South Korea To Russia

PT PLN Nusantara Power, PLN's Subholding Plant, revealed that it is exploring cooperation with other countries related to the development of Nuclear Power Plants (PLTN) in Indonesia.

Just so you know, the Indonesian government is targeting PLTN operations to take place in 2032 with a total capacity of 250 MW.

Director of Management Human Capital and Administration of PLN Nusantara Power Employees Aji said, there are many factors that cause nuclear development to be carried out in collaboration. The state is being explored for PLTN cooperation, one of which is South Korea.

"Not only South Korea, there is also Russia, there is the United States. But we are still exploring it because we don't know what the technology is like," Aji told the media crew, Tuesday, April 23.

Aji said, it is natural that the development of PLTN is carried out slowly because it depends on the needs of each country. According to him, if Indonesia wants to accelerate energy adaptation, the most appropriate thing to do is accelerate the developer of PLTN. On the other hand, if you are not in a hurry, Indonesia can still use conventional renewable energy such as Solar Power Plants (PLTS), Hydroelectric Power Plants (PLTA), biomasses, and others that he calls still sufficient to support domestic needs.

"Actually, the problem is far away or does not depend on our needs. Our need going forward with an adaptation of your energy as fast as possible? If the activity is getting faster with PLTN. PLTN is without issuing CO2. If you take it easy, PLTN will slowly be fine," explained Aji.

Meski demikian Aji menegaskan semua rencana pengembangan ini masih dalam tahap penjajakan dengan negara-negara terkait, apalagi masih ada konflik geopolitik yang terjadi sehingga masih perlu dikaji lebih jauh.

"The exploration first is still because we don't know what the technology is because it's political, geopolitical is also cloudy," concluded Aji.

For information, previously PLN NP collaborated with Korean Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) Co. Ltd., in exploring the pre-study of the feasibility of nuclear power plants in Indonesia with small modular reactor technology.

This was marked by the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the President Director of PLN Nusantara Power, Ruly Firmansyah and the President & CEO of KHP, Jooho Hwang at the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28), in Dubai, United Arab Emirates on Friday, December 1.

President Director of PLN Nusantara Power, Ruly Firmansyah is optimistic that collaboration in this alternative energy study will have a positive impact on the energy transition process in the country.

"The current development of nuclear power is very prominent, safer, smaller and modular in nature, so it has an important role in our generating landscape," Ruly said in a statement to the media quoted Monday, December 4.

In an effort to make the energy transition a success, Ruly hopes to build a long-term strategic partnership with KHNP and various parties.
