JAKARTA - The National Committee for Governance Policy (KNKG) strengthens the cooperative industry by issuing the General Guidelines for Government of Indonesian Cooperatives (PUG-KOPIN).

Secretary of the Coordinating Ministry for the Economy Susiwijono Moegiarso said Indonesia needed economic transformation in various sectors, especially the empowerment of MSMEs and cooperatives which were believed to be driving the populist economy.

"This is a very good opportunity, because if we look at several PUGs (Governance General Guidelines) that have been socialized, especially PUGs related to this cooperative, I think it is very important for us to continue to socialize and later several plans for future changes may also be the dynamics we need to convey together," said Susiwijono in a speech themed 'Governancing Cooperatives as an Ethics Guide to Ensuring the Sustainability of Indonesian Cooperatives' in Jakarta, quoted from Antara, Wednesday, February 7.

In his remarks, Susiwijono said that the volume of Indonesia's cooperative business in 2023 increased by around 8.51 percent compared to the previous year which was recorded at IDR 182.35 trillion.

"If we look at the cooperative's business volume since 2016/2017 has increased quite high and lastly it was almost Rp200 trillion. Now this is also a note for us together. On the one hand, it is a huge potential, on the other hand, better governance needs to be regulated," he explained.

The contribution of cooperatives to gross domestic product (GDP) tends to increase every year, until 2020 and 2021 cooperatives contribute 6.20 percent of Indonesia's GDP.

Therefore, continued Susiwijono, the great potential of cooperatives needs to be continuously optimized in order to be able to provide wider economic benefits and impacts for the community.

Cooperatives will be able to play a very important role in developing many business sectors in the regions, for example in the agricultural, plantation, and livestock sectors, so that if properly managed it will play a bigger role in the national economy. For this reason, improving the cooperative ecosystem and good governance into an urgency.

Susiwijono also revealed that PUG-KOPIN is expected to be a reference for cooperative governance for all cooperative stakeholders, as well as a guide for all cooperatives in Indonesia to be able to carry out good organizational governance practices.

In addition, it was also conveyed that PUG-KOPIN as the first to be issued by the KNKG, is expected to be able to realize the mandate of the 1945 Constitution, so that cooperatives can play a bigger role in the national economic system.
