The Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) has confirmed that it will carry out priority programs for the supervision and control of smelter industry activities this year.

This is done so that the incident at PT Indonesia Tsingshan Stainless Steel (ITSS) in Morowali, Central Sulawesi, does not happen again.

"This year the Ministry of Industry has a priority program for monitoring and controlling industrial activities in the smelter industry. We have started this priority, of course, through the monitoring and control system (wasdal) which we started testing last year and this year we will apply it," said the Director General of Regional Security and International Industrial Access of the Ministry of Industry Eko S. A. Cahyanto at a press conference at the Ministry of Industry office, Jakarta, Wednesday, January 31.

Eko said that his party had coordinated with all stakeholders related to industrial governance, including local governments (Pemda).

"We have also coordinated with business actors, both direct industry players and industrial estate managers," he said.

According to Eko, his party wants to continue to improve this governance so that activities related to safety and safety of production equipment, including distribution, can be even better.

"For this reason, indeed, his industrial development friends are also very focused on providing guidance and indeed specifically prioritized this year in the smelter industry sector," he added.

Previously reported, the Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) has launched an electronic-based surveillance and control system (wasdal).

This is an effort to mitigate the occurrence of another incident at PT Indonesia Tsingshan Stainless Steel (ITSS) in Morowali, Central Sulawesi.

The Director General of Resilience, Region, and International Industrial Access (KPAII) of the Ministry of Industry Eko S. A. Cahyanto said that the presence of electronic wasdal could make it easier for his party to identify and monitor industrial or corporate compliance with investment regulations, one of which is the implementation point of Health and Work Safety (K3).

"So, starting in early 2024, we will identify all sectors that are categorized as required to report, including later involving local governments, for industries that we see must be fully monitored in the aspect of the regulations later," said Eko in a year-end media meeting monitored online, Thursday, December 28.

Eko hopes that the new system will be able to become an effort to prevent the smelter case in Morowali from happening again.
