The Karian Dam Meets The Water Needs Of Jakarta And Banten Residents

JAKARTA - The Karian Dam, which is one of the National Strategic Projects (PSN) in Pasir Tanjung Village, Rangkasbitung District, Lebak, Banten Province, was inaugurated by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) on Monday, January 8.

The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) said that the Karian Dam has benefits to meet the provision of raw water for residents of Jakarta and Banten.

"The Karian Dam, which was built in 2015 and completed in 2024, has the main benefits of fulfilling the supply of raw water which will be channeled through the Karian Intake with a capacity of 5.5 cubic meters per second, and Ciyah Intake with a capacity of 9.1 cubic meters per second," said Director General of Water Resources of the Ministry of PUPR Bob Arthur Lombgia in a written statement received by VOI, Tuesday, January 9.

Bob said, Intake Ciyah will flow raw water in West Jakarta with a capacity of 3.2 cubic meters per second. Then, Bogor Regency with a capacity of 0.2 cubic meters per second and Banten with a capacity of 5.7 cubic meters per second.

Meanwhile, Intake Karian also has a function to increase the need for the Ciujung Irrigation Region (DI) for an area of 22,000 hectares (ha), and flow raw water for Serang and Cilegon with a capacity of 1.5 cubic meters per second.

The Karian Dam was built in 2015 and cost up to IDR 2.27 trillion. This dam has a capacity volume of 315 million cubic meters and has an inundation area of 1,773 ha.

The Karian Dam will provide benefits for the people in Banten Province, DKI Jakarta and a small part in West Java.

First, irrigation benefits for 22,000 ha rice fields. Second, it will meet the raw water needs with a capacity of 14.6 cubic meters per second in Serang Regency, Serang City, Cilegon City, Lebak Regency, Tangerang Regency, South Tangerang City, Tangerang City, West Jakarta City, and Bogor Regency.

In addition, the Karian Dam also has flood reduction benefits for the downstream area of the dam of 60.8 million cubic meters. This dam is also useful as a Micro Hydro Power Plant (PLTM) with a capacity of 1.8 MW.

In addition, the Karian Dam also utilizes technology in its operating SOPs. For dam gate operations, both the Intake Karian, Ciyah and Spillway Intake doors, are controlled at the Dam Management Unit Control Center (UPB).

The Control Center also noted water level, reservoir entry and rainfall discharge, including forecasting based on data recorded every hour and day. For maintenance, it is also carried out regularly and periodically in accordance with the reservoir operation plan that has been prepared.
