JAKARTA - The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) said that the National Strategic Project (PSN) of the West Semarang Water Supply System or SPAM can serve drinking water for 350 thousand people.

"The existence of the West Semarang SPAM is eagerly awaited by the public, especially to increase the supply of piped clean water in Semarang City," said Spokesperson for the Ministry of PUPR, Endra S. Atmawidjaja, in a written statement, Saturday, December 16, 2023.

Endra said the construction of the West Semarang SPAM was one of the National Strategic Projects (PSN) that had been completed at the end of 2023 and was ready to serve the community.

It is known that the Ministry of PUPR has gradually completed the construction of the West Semarang Drinking Water Supply System (SPAM) in Central Java Province.

The presence of this SPAM is expected to answer the problem of the availability of clean water and land subsidence in the city of Semarang.

West Semarang SPAM itself has a capacity of 1,000 liters per second with a drinking water service coverage of 70,000 house connections (SR) or the equivalent of 350,000 people in Tugu, West Semarang, and Ngaliyan Districts.

This SPAM service is prioritized to fulfill domestic needs so that people enjoy drinking water and improve public health levels related to clean water.

Meanwhile, the raw water source for West Semarang SPAM comes from Jatibarang Dam. In 2017-2019 an intake with a capacity of 1,050 liters per second with the APBN budget of the Directorate General (Ditjen) of Water Resources of the Ministry of PUPR through the Juwana Pemali River Basin Center (BBWS) worth Rp105 billion.

Furthermore, in 2019-2021, the Jatibarang Water Management Installation (IPA) was built through a Government Cooperation with Business Entity (PPP) scheme, namely PT ASB with a value of IDR 417 billion.

At the end of 2021, the Ministry of PUPR through the Directorate General of Human Settlements will optimize the function of West Semarang SPAM by building a main distribution network of 52.2 kilometers (km) to support the KPBU program.

The work was carried out by the Central Java Regional Settlement Infrastructure Center (BPPW) with service provider PT Wijaya Karya-Gemilang (KSO) since November 2021 and has been completed in April 2023.

The construction costs of around Rp224 billion are used for the construction of distribution networks from Desel reservoirs along 13.2 km, distribution networks from Manyaran 1 reservoirs along 5.9 km, distribution networks from Manyaran 2 reservoirs along 15.8 km, and distribution networks from Bambankerep reservoirs along 17.3 km.

SPAM West Semarang is a pilot project for the development of a piping water management system with a KPBU funding scheme in Central Java Province.

Now, the SPAM is managed by the Semarang City Government through Perumda Air Drinking Tirta Moedal to optimize piped drinking water services to the home connection.
