Studying The Feasibility Of PLTN In Indonesia, PLN Collaborates With A Company From South Korea

JAKARTA - PT PLN (Persero) through its subsidiary, PLN Nusantara Power (PLN NP) collaborates with Korean Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) Co. Ltd., in exploring the pre-study of the feasibility of nuclear power plants in Indonesia with small modular reactor technology.

This was marked by the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the President Director of PLN Nusantara Power, Ruly Firmansyah and the President & CEO of KHP, Jooho Hwang at the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28), in Dubai, United Arab Emirates on Friday, December 1.

On this occasion, the President Director of PLN Nusantara Power, Ruly Firmansyah, is optimistic that collaboration in this alternative energy study will have a positive impact on the energy transition process in the country.

"The current development of nuclear power is very prominent, safer, smaller and modular in nature, so it has an important role in our generating landscape," Ruly said in a statement to the media quoted Monday, December 4.

In an effort to make the energy transition a success, Ruly hopes to build a long-term strategic partnership with KHNP and various parties.

"Nuclear power plants to support Indonesia's energy transition. We will conduct a feasibility study related to nuclear power plants in Indonesia adapting the small modular reactor technology that has been carried out by South Korea," said Ruly.

Please note, KHNP is the only nuclear power generation company in South Korea and has comprehensive competence and expertise in the operation and maintenance of nuclear power plants, including training and qualifying operators; handling fuel and nuclear materials; as well as licensing of nuclear power plants.

Meanwhile, KHNP President & CEO Joo Hwang appreciated the cooperation between the two parties and supported Indonesia's target of going to Net Zero Emissions.

"I hope this MoU can establish collaborative relations that include the introduction of small modular reactors, research and technology exchange in the field of nuclear energy. In addition, this partnership will contribute to achieving Net Zero Emissions goals in Indonesia," said Joo Hwang.

He explained that KHNP is the third largest nuclear power generation operator in the world that is safely and reliable with more than 50 years of experience in building and operating nuclear power plants and even exporting them to the UAE.
