JAKARTA - The Ministry of Transportation through the Directorate General of Sea Transportation revealed Indonesia's commitment to strengthening the shipping industry and the role of women in the maritime sector.

This commitment was conveyed in the 73rd Technical Cooperation Committee (TC) session at the IMO Headquarters, London, England. The trial took place from 16 to 19 October 2023 and was opened by the Secretary General of IMO, Kitack Lim and led by Chair of Antigua and Barbuda, Amb.

The Indonesian delegation led by the Chairperson of Substitute I, the Attache for Transportation of the Indonesian Embassy in London, Barkah Bayu Mirajaya revealed, this trial is an important platform for IMO member countries to increase technical knowledge and resources needed in the operation of a safe and efficient shipping industry.

"TC was formed with the aim of assisting the government of IMO member countries in overcoming technical problems that may be faced in the shipping industry," he said in an official statement, Tuesday, October 17.

During the TC 73 Session, the main focus was the discussion of technical cooperation programs between the IMO and its member countries.

Barkah said these programs were designed to help implement IMO rules, especially in developing countries, while strengthening the role of women in the maritime sector.

The Indonesian government has been actively involved in various capacity building activities under the framework of the Integrated Technical Cooperation Program (ITCP) with IMO. In addition, Indonesia has also participated in other IMO capacity building projects, such as the MEPSEAS Project and GloFouling Project," said Barkah.

The hope, continued Barkah, is that through Indonesia's active role in the TC, the capacity of the shipping industry can be increased through the capacity building program.

"And the role of women in the maritime sector is further strengthened. This will make a positive contribution in maintaining the safety and efficiency of the global shipping industry," he said.

In addition to the active role in the TC Session, Indonesia is also a sponsor of the coffee break as an effort to support Indonesia's re-nomination as a member of the IMO Council category C for the period 2024-2025.

This nomination will be discussed at the morning session on Thursday, October 19, 2023.
