JAKARTA - The Ministry of Transportation through the Directorate General of Sea Transportation has begun to carry out readiness in terms of transportation safety aspects, as preparation ahead of the implementation of the 2023 Eid Transportation.

Director General of Sea Transportation Arif Toha said that the readiness in terms of transportation safety is to carry out seaworthiness tests for passenger ships at ports.

The order is contained in the Instruction of the Director General of Sea Transportation Number IR-DJPL 1 of 2023 dated February 8, 2023 concerning the Marine Examination of the Eid Eid al-Fitr Passenger Vessel 1444 H in 2023.

Arif has also instructed all Heads of the Main Harbormaster Office, Head of the Batam Port Office, Head of the Harbormaster Office and Port Authority Class 1-IV, as well as Head of the Class I-III Port Organizing Unit Office to carry out sea tests for passenger ships.

"The implementation of the seaworthiness test for passenger ships starts from February 8 to March 20, 2023, in accordance with the distribution of the person in charge of the ship's seaworthiness test," he told reporters, in Jakarta, Wednesday, February 15.

Arif said the purpose of carrying out the ship's seaworthiness test was to increase supervision, and implement provisions related to fulfilling shipworthiness requirements in the form of inspection and certification.

This includes following up on the results of the evaluation of reports from the Office of the Technical Implementation Unit (UPT) of the Directorate General of Sea Transportation which meet applicable standard provisions before the certificate is issued.

The expected result, said Arif, was an increase in shipping safety, as part of efforts to achieve a road map to zero accident.

"After conducting a sea test of passenger ships, all UPT offices must report the readiness of sea transportation facilities for Eid al-Fitr 1444 H activities in 2023," said Arif.

In the report, Arif explained that it must contain a ship registration number, the name Marine Inspector in charge and the date of testing as well as inspection records that must be followed up.

In the event that the ship's seaworthiness test inspection is found to be incompatible with major, it will be given time to fulfill the discrepancy no later than April 10, 2023.

"If until the predetermined deadline has not been fulfilled, then the ship is prohibited from operating until discrepancies or recommendations are met," said Arif.

In addition, Arif also instructed all his staff to carry out continuous monitoring of passenger ships until the deadline for the 2023 Eid transportation post.
