PT PLN (Persero) announced an agreement with Amazon for the development of new renewable energy with a capacity of 210 megawatts (MW) in four solar power plants (PLTS) in Indonesia. This is the first agreement for two companies to allow the addition of large-scale PLTS into the national system.

Based on this agreement, Amazon will buy EBT-based electricity in Indonesia supplied through the four PLTS projects to support its operational activities in Indonesia. The four solar power projects will be located in Bali and Java on the Java-Madura-Bali network.

Amazon's commitment to being off-takers is a major driver for these projects, which allows PLN to introduce similar opportunities for other interested organizations, opening up more company EBT procurement options in Indonesia.

The PLN initiative in renewable energy procurement will bring Indonesia closer to achieving net zero emissions by 2060.

"The Indonesian government is committed to reducing greenhouse emissions to achieve a net zero goal by 2060," said Darmawan Prasodjo, President Director of PT PLN (Persero), in a written statement, Tuesday, November 15.

"PLN is fully committed to supporting the government's program to implement clean energy and accelerate it with a clear roadmap to achieve the mission. This collaboration between the private sector and the public is a key strategy to ensure a clean and affordable energy future," he added.

PLN will build four new utility-scale power plants included in the 2021-2030 Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL) which is the greenest RUPTL we have ever had in national history, with the addition of 20.9 gigawatts of renewable energy power plants.

"With this agreement we support Amazon towards 100 percent renewable energy, and hope this initiative will inspire future collaboration with multinational companies with other high-ranking environmentally-aware companies," added Darmawan.

"We are pleased to announce our first EBT project in Indonesia in collaboration with PLN, placing Amazon on track to 100 percent renewable energy," saidwishart, Director of the Planning, Delivery & Implementing Data Center for Asia-Pacific, Japan & China.

PLN and Amazon's team have worked together to open up new ways for companies to get EBT domestically. The EBT project will supply energy for Amazon's operations in Indonesia and help advance Amazon's goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions across its business by 2040.

"We look forward to continuing collaboration with PLN to allow more renewable energy for projects in Indonesia," saidPL.

Amazon is committed to achieving net-zero carbon across its entire business by 2040 and is heading there to drive its operations with 100 percent EBT by 2025.

Amazon is the world's largest renewable energy buyer company with 383 projects worldwide. In Asia, Amazon has now invested in 15 large-scale renewable energy projects with total capacities of more than 1,300 MW across Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan and Singapore.

Once Amazon's 383 renewable energy projects are fully operational, each is expected to lower more than 18.5 million metric tons of carbon emissions per year. This renewable energy project will supply energy to Amazon's company headquarters, Amazon service centers, and AWS data centers that support millions of subscribers globally.
