JAKARTA - PT PLN (Persero) encourages the use of waste in Sidoarjo Regency as co-firing at Steam Power Plants (PLTU) managed by its subsidiary, PT Pembangkitan Jawa-Bali (PJB).

The signing of this collaboration was carried out by PJB Director of Operations 2 Rachmanoe Indarto and Sidoarjo Regent Ahmad Muhdlor Ali, witnessed by PLN's Director of Mega Projects and EBT Wiluyo Kusdwiharto and PLN Independent Commissioner Alex Iskandar Munaf, as well as KPK Deputy Prevention and Monitoring Pahala Nainggolan in the provision of solid Jumput Fuel (BBJP) from waste in Sidoarjo Regency.

Deputy for Prevention and Monitoring of the KPK, Pahala Nainggolan, said that synergies between agencies such as PJB and the Sidoarjo Regency Government need to be executed directly to bring about greener environmental changes.

This collaboration will also have an impact on reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as set out in Indonesia's Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) target. In addition, the use of waste as BBJP is also one of the KPK's recommendations.

"The co-firing program is an effort to accelerate the target of the EBT mix and the carbon neutral commitment by substitutioning part of coal with alternative energy sources such as waste, biomass, and others. We support the acceleration of similar programs in order to achieve a better Indonesian environment," Pahala said in his statement, Saturday, September 17.

Sidoarjo Regent Ahmad Muhdlor Ali also expressed his gratitude for the achievement of this agreement. According to him, this collaboration will encourage all areas in Sidoarjo Regency to be able to collect and manage their waste and be converted into BBJP.

"The PLTU co-firing program that uses BBJP is one solution for the problem of waste in our city (Sidoarjo). I hope that this synergy will continue to be established with the aim of creating Sidoarjo free of garbage and the realization of a clean environment and more beautiful air quality," he explained.

Director of Mega Projects and EBT PT PLN (Persero) Wiluyo Kusdwiharto said this agreement had an important meaning for both parties. According to him, the initiation of PJB in collaboration with the Sidoarjo Regency Government should be implemented by other PLTUs. Given that this collaboration will benefit PJB and Sidoarjo Regencies continuously.

"The co-firing program is expected to contribute 3.59 percent to the renewable energy mix which is targeted to reach 23 percent by 2025. Biomass supply is needed to reach 10.2 million tons per year. For that we need support from all stakeholders, including support in terms of policies, incentives or compensation, exemption from VAT and PSDH, to support for waste processing facilities," explained Wiluyo.

The realization of this collaboration is also a clear proof of PJB's commitment to realizing the target of the NRE mix through co-firing technology at PLTU as well as efforts to improve environmental quality by helping to overcome waste problems. The waste management program into fuel has been initiated by PJB and the Sidoarjo Regency Government since early 2022.

After going through the research stage, security testing for the use of BBJP at PLTU, as well as mapping and mitigating risk, 160 tons of BBJP has been carried out from the Jabon Sidoarjo TPS which is used as co-firing fuel at the Tanjung Awar-Awar PLTU and Paiton PLTU in July and September 2022, the BBJP can be used as fuel to replace coal in co-firing of about 3 percent.
