JAKARTA - Member of Commission VII DPR RI Abdul Kadir Kading asked the government to encourage PLN and Inalum to accelerate domestic aluminum production so that they no longer depend on imports.

According to him, as a country with the number 6 bauxite potential in the world, Indonesia is considered capable of meeting its own needs without having to import from abroad.

"Inalum's production is 250 thousand tons, while the demand for all of Indonesia is around 700 thousand tons per year, meaning that there is still a need of around 500 thousand tons," said Kading in his statement, Monday, February 7.

This politician from the National Awakening Party (PKB) faction encourages related agencies and institutions to synergize. For example, as happened at PT Inalum (Persero), one of the state-owned companies engaged in the aluminum smelting industry, requires additional support for electrical energy to increase its production.

"Increasing this production, the key is in the combustion and so on from PLN, therefore we will encourage PLN and Inalum to accelerate," continued Kading.

So that in the future Indonesia can immediately become independent from aluminum imports, even if necessary, according to him, Indonesia can carry out aluminum exports in the future.

To support the plan, Kading revealed that Commission VII DPR RI plans to form a team tasked with overseeing the acceleration of increasing aluminum production.

"Commission VII plans to form a supervisory team to oversee this acceleration and increase aluminum production," he concluded.

Previously, Member of Commission VII DPR RI Lamhot Sinaga also said the same thing, namely that his party encouraged the synergy between PT Inalum and PT PLN in terms of providing electrical resources to meet the demand for electrical power that could support the increase in PT Inalum's production capacity.

He revealed that the downstreaming of aluminum products is currently considered quite good, although most of the aluminum materials still depend on imports. For this reason, the use of bauxite as a raw material for aluminum, which is one of Indonesia's large reserves of resources, needs to be increased.
