Get Ready For Your Outfits To Be Expensive, The Government Imposes Import Duties On Imported Clothes To Protect The Domestic Industry

JAKARTA – The government through the Directorate General of Customs and Excise (DJBC) of the Ministry of Finance has officially imposed Safeguard Measures Import Duty (BMTP) on imported clothing products that enter the jurisdiction of the Republic of Indonesia.

The decision is contained in the Minister of Finance Regulation (PMK) Number 142/PMK.010/21 concerning the Imposition of Safeguard Measures Import Duty on the Import of Clothing Products and Clothing Accessories.

In a press statement, DJBC stated that this effort was taken to protect the national industry when there was a surge in imports of similar domestically produced goods that directly compete and have the potential to cause losses.

"The imposition of BMTP is an additional general or additional import duty based on the applicable international goods trade agreement," said DJBC, Tuesday, November 16.

Meanwhile, the imposition of this tariff is a follow-up to the investigation by the Indonesian Trade Security Committee which has clearly proven that there is a threat to the domestic industry.

In detail, there are 134 types of tariffs charged with a value of Rp. 19,260 to Rp. 63,000 for each item. This amount will decrease gradually in the following years.

Meanwhile, several types of products that are subject to import duties include formal tops, casual clothes, dresses, outwear, accessories and baby clothes, headwear, and neckwear.

"The BMTP policy is expected to have a positive impact on the recovery of domestic industry performance and restrain the pace of imports so that the economy can increase along with the increase in domestic consumption," explained the Directorate General of Customs and Excise.

The BMTP rules for imported clothing were promulgated on 22 October 2021 and are effective from 12 November 2021 for three years.
