Ukrainian Drone Attack Kills 12 in Russia's Nizhnekamsk

JAKARTA - At least 12 people were killed and 39 others were injured in a Ukrainian drone attack targeting industrial and civilian targets in the city of Nizhnekamsk, Tatarstan region, Russia - the location of a large oil refinery - said Mayor Radmir Belyayev on Monday.

According to various Russian media, the oil refinery in the region - which is one of the most technologically advanced refineries in Russia - was hit by the attack, Al Arabiya reported from Reuters (10/8).

In a video that has not been verified on social media, a plume of smoke can be seen billowing from a location that looks like an oil refinery.

Reuters was not able to independently verify the footage.

Tatneft's TANECO refinery, which was also attacked by Ukraine in early June, processed 17 million tons of crude oil in 2024 and produced 2.7 million tons of gasoline and 8.5 million tons of diesel fuel.

The head of the Tatarstan region, Rustam Minnikhanov, has declared a period of mourning following the Ukrainian attack, said Belyayev's mayor.

Ukraine has stepped up attacks on Russian oil refineries in recent months as part of a campaign that has led to fuel shortages in many parts of Russia, although authorities say most of the initial problems have now been resolved.
