Death Toll from Banir in India's Assam State Rises to 100

JAKARTA - The number of deaths due to flooding in the state of Assam, northeast India, has reached 100 people, according to a statement.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority said on Sunday night that two additional deaths had been reported, Anadolu reported (10/8).

The state's chief minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, said via the X social media platform, about 1.1 million people were affected in 25 districts in the state.

He said that more than 2,000 distribution centers are now operating throughout Assam. "Rehabilitation efforts continue," he added.

On Sunday, the Assam government also began conducting direct house-to-house data collection on flood damage in all affected districts.

"Damaged houses, livestock, and all other impacts will be recorded by no later than August 31. No family will be missed in getting their rehabilitation assistance rights," said Sarma.

Quoted from ReliefWeb, the floods in Assam began on July 19, 2026, triggered by very high monsoon rainfall - reaching up to 490 percent above normal levels - in several areas of Upper Assam.

Rising river levels and continuous rains caused flood waters to spread rapidly to various districts, as well as inundating villages, farmland and vital infrastructure.

The emergency conditions peaked on July 27-28, when more than 800 villages were submerged and the impact of the flood was at its highest level. Charaideo, Sivasagar, and Jorhat were recorded as the most severely affected districts, experiencing widespread flooding that submerged villages and damaged livelihoods and the agricultural sector.
