BHOPAL - Indonesia and India will share the task of restoring 100 Candi Perwara in the Prambanan Temple Complex. Each country handles 50 temples with a target of completing the work before 2029.
The plan was discussed by Minister of Culture Fadli Zon together with the Minister of Culture of India Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on the sidelines of the XI BRICS Culture Ministers' Meeting in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India, Friday, August 7.
Fadli said that the cooperation not only concerns the physical restoration of the temple, but also the exchange of knowledge and conservation expertise between the two countries.
The relationship between Indonesian and Indian cultures, said Fadli, is also part of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries.
In addition to Prambanan, the meeting discussed the Pucangan Inscription or Calcutta Stone which is currently in the Indian Museum, Kolkata.
Indonesia hopes that the dialogue with India can continue, including to pave the way for the return of the inscription to the country.
The two countries also discussed the implementation of the Indonesia-India Cultural Exchange Programme 2025-2028. The programme includes artist residencies, museum fellowships, archaeological field schools, joint research, joint film production, and collaboration on digital cultural heritage.
Another agenda is the Tagore-Dewantara Year 2026-2027 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore's visit to Indonesia.
The program is directed at cultural, educational, literary, academic, and youth exchange cooperation.
Indian Minister of Culture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said the historical relationship between the two countries could be the basis for expanding cooperation in the preservation of cultural heritage.
India also opened the opportunity for cooperation in the conservation of technology-based manuscripts and maritime culture. One of the things discussed was the plan to include Phinisi ships in the Indian National Maritime Complex.
Fadli assessed that the relationship between Indonesia and India is getting closer, including through President Prabowo Subianto's visit to India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Indonesia, including to Prambanan Temple.
In the meeting, Fadli was accompanied by the Director General of Diplomacy, Promotion, and Cultural Cooperation Endah T.D. Retnoastuti, Acting Charge d'Affaires Ad Interim of the Indonesian Embassy in New Delhi Yudho Sasongko, and the Director of Cultural Cooperation Mardisontori.
From the Indian side, the Joint Secretary of the Indian Ministry of Culture, Arvind Kumar, was present.
