Suryakencana Square Burns, Mount Gede Pangrango Climb Closed for 5 Days

JAKARTA - The Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park Headquarters (BB TNGGP) temporarily closed the climb for five days because the land in the Suryakancana Square area was on fire, and supervision was tightened to prevent illegal climbing during the closure.

BB TNGGP Public Relations Officer Ade Bagja said that the handling of land fires was carried out together with joint officers and volunteers with a total of around 125 people.

Climbers who have registered to climb on August 7-11 or during the closure can apply for a refund or change the climbing schedule and do not force themselves to climb illegally.

"We will tighten supervision by placing officers on every climbing route, to anticipate illegal climbing during the closure. Strict sanctions will be given to those who climb illegally," said Ade as quoted by ANTARA, Friday, August 7.

His party immediately issued a Circular Letter (SE) from the Head of BBTNGGP Number SE.18 of 2026 regarding the closure of climbing in the context of handling the fire in Suryakencana Square for five days starting from August 7-11.

The results of the investigation into the fire, he said, were still awaiting a report from officers in the field who had been handling it with dozens of volunteers since Thursday (6/8) evening, including how much land had burned and the exact cause of the fire.

"We are still waiting for a report from the officers who have handled it together with joint officers and volunteers. We don't know for sure how much land has burned and what the initial cause of the fire was," said Ade.

He emphasized that security and supervision would be tightened during the closure period, including involving the community around the entrance to the Mount Putri climbing area, Pacet District, the Cibodas tourist area, and the Salabintana-Sukabumi entrance.

"When it is found that there are illegal climbers, strict sanctions will be given ranging from social sanctions to banning climbing in all national parks in Indonesia," said AdeBagja.
