Iraqi PM holds emergency meeting after US-Saudi air raids

JAKARTA - Iraqi Prime Minister (PM) Ali al-Zaidimemerintahkanrapat darurat Dewan Menteri untuk Keamanan Nasional setelah serangan udara gabungan oleh Arab Saudi dan Amerika Serikat terhadap negara tersebut pada Rabu dini hari.

The Iraqi Media Security Unit said PM al-Zaidi, who also serves as the commander-in-chief of the Iraqi Armed Forces, instructed the council to immediately hold a meeting in response to the developments in the security situation and the airstrikes that hit the country.

An official statement regarding the development of the situation and the decisions taken in the meeting will be announced after the meeting is completed.

As reported by ANTARA from Anadolu, Wednesday, July 29, the emergency meeting was held after the US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that US and Saudi Arabian joint forces launched a precision attack on groups allied with Iran in Iraq.

CENTCOM claimed the operation targeted locations associated with attacks on US forces and Saudi Arabian energy infrastructure.

According to CENTCOM, US and Saudi fighter jets attacked a number of logistics facilities and weapons depots in eastern Iraq.

The attack was said to be a response to more than 30 drone attacks allegedly directed by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in the previous 72 hours.

Meanwhile, the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), a coalition of Shiite armed groups mostly backed by Iran, said a number of their bases were hit.

The PMF said the attack resulted in casualties, injuries, and damage to a number of facilities.
