JAKARTA - The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) stated that the sugarcane plantation in Sragen Regency, Central Java was burned down, which started from the burning of grass by a resident and then spread.

Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center, Abdul Muhari, said based on data from the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Sragen Regency, the total area of land affected by the fire is estimated to be 4.5 hectares.

"The burned area is estimated to be 4.5 hectares and did not cause any casualties," he said, quoted by ANTARA, Tuesday, July 14.

The fire incident in Bendo Village, Sukodono District, is considered worthy of attention and a serious lesson for the community if burning land without calculation can have dangerous effects, especially during the dry season, which according to climatologists is drier than the average due to the moderate El Nino phenomenon.

The BNPB Operations Control Directorate confirmed that the fire incident was reported to have occurred on Monday (13/7) morning at around 09.45 WIB, triggered by the alleged negligence of grass burning activities by one of the residents around the location. The fire, which was originally small, then quickly spread and spread to the sugar cane plantation area due to the wind gusts.

Land extinguishing efforts were carried out intensively by a joint team of officers, including the Sragen Regency BPBD rapid response team and the local Fire Department.

Officers in the field reported that the condition was in a cooling state at least until Monday afternoon, but the team was still on standby to ensure that all the remaining embers were completely extinguished and did not trigger a follow-up fire.
