JAKARTA - A tanker was reportedly hit by a missile attack while crossing the Strait of Hormuz via the southern route along the Oman coast.

UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said the missile attack was first reported to authorities, according to the relevant maritime authorities. UKMTO said the incident, which occurred at a location 13 nautical miles (about 15 miles) southeast of Liman, Oman, was under investigation.

On Monday, July 13, UKMTO reported another tanker being hit by an "unidentified projectile" at a position of 40 nautical miles (about 46 miles) northeast of Qalhat, Oman.

"Ships are urged to pass with caution and report any suspicious activities to UKMTO," the authority said, as reported by CNN.

The reports come amid rising tensions in the vital shipping lane, which normally carries a fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas supplies.

Tehran said late on Monday it had attacked two "rogue supertankers," claiming the vessels had ignored warnings from Iranian authorities.
