JAKARTA - High-ranking officials of the European Union assessed that the renewed escalation of the United States - Iran tensions made it more difficult to talk about ending the war.

The comments of the Head of Foreign Policy of the European Union Kaja Kallas on Wednesday were made following the US-Iran exchange.

"The exchange of fire between the US and Iran is further complicating the already tense talks to end the war. Iran's attacks on Bahrain and Kuwait are unacceptable," Kallas wrote on the X social media platform, launching Anadolu (8/7).

Pointing to Iran's commitment to reopening the Strait of Hormuz, Kallas said recent attacks on ships near the strategic waterway violated the commitment and threatened to disrupt the recovery of energy supplies.

He also called for freedom of navigation not to be hindered.

"Next Monday, the EU Foreign Ministers will meet with their counterparts from the Gulf countries to discuss how we can work together to support the implementation of the agreement and maintain freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea," Kallas explained.

Previously, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it had launched missiles and drones targeting 85 US military sites, including the Salman Port, the headquarters of the US Navy's Fifth Fleet in Bahrain, and the Ali Al-Salem Air Base in Kuwait.

It comes following a fresh wave of US military strikes against Iran that hit more than 80 targets in response to Iranian attacks on merchant vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

US Central Command (US CENTCOM) said the attack was carried out "in direct response to Iran's attacks on merchant vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz."

It is known that Iran and the US signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on June 18 aimed at ending their military conflict, which began at the end of February.
