Spanish meteorologists warned on Tuesday that it would be the hottest day of June as an intense heat dome pushed temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius in most parts of the country.

The highest warning level was imposed by the Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) in several areas of Andalusia, the Basque Country and Cantabria, where temperatures are expected to reach 44 degrees Celsius.

Around 17 of Spain's 50 provincial capitals are forecast to experience temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius. Tropical night phenomena, when temperatures do not drop below 20 degrees Celsius, are also expected to occur widely so that buildings are difficult to cool.

"Tuesday could be the hottest day ever recorded in June and close to the record for the hottest day in history," said RTVE meteorologist Marc Santandreu.

Heat waves began on Sunday and have broken a number of temperature records.

AEMET said overnight temperatures in several southeastern Spanish regions remained above 30 degrees Celsius for three consecutive days. This has never happened in June on the Iberian Peninsula.

The city of Palma de Mallorca also recorded the hottest night in June in its history of observations.

The extreme heat wave was triggered by a heat dome stretching across most of Western Europe, along with the entry of very hot and dry air masses from the Sahara Desert to the north.

According to AEMET, a high pressure system over mainland Europe and a low pressure system to the west of the Iberian Peninsula are pushing the Sahara air mass northwards.

Based on the analysis of the Climate Shift Index, climate change makes the possibility of these extreme heat waves at least five times greater.

The combination of these weather patterns and the intensity of the summer sun is expected to produce very high temperatures and last at least until the middle of the week.

A number of other European countries, including France, Italy, Switzerland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom, have also issued the highest level of warnings for hot weather.
