JAKARTA - Minister of Environment (LH)/Head of the Environment Control Agency (BPLH) Moh Jumhur Hidayat asked the public and corporations to collaborate to share water to prevent forest and land fires (karhutla) in Riau.
Jumhur emphasized that through inclusive water governance, companies can continue to operate while maintaining environmental sustainability and empowering the surrounding community.
"We see mitigation of land fires, collaboration between corporations and communities, and today we also see how the first one, namely water sharing with the community, to ensure that peat or peat land gets water flow not only in the concession area, but also in the community area," said Jumhur in an official statement in Jakarta, Saturday.
He conveyed this when reviewing the distribution of water systems and monitoring emissions based on science in the operational area of PT Riau Andalan Pulp and Paper (RAPP), Pelalawan Regency, Riau Province, Friday (19/6).
According to him, the step of sharing water or water sharing is a tangible proof of the commitment of KLH/BPLH to maintain national peat hydrology while reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
The Minister of the Majority also stated that the key to long-term prevention of forest fires is the integration of fair water management and not only focusing on corporate concession areas, but also touching on the land owned by the surrounding community.
During the review, the peat water management system was carried out through the division of zones based on the uniformity of land elevation. Hydrological infrastructure such as the construction and maintenance of canal barriers and monitoring of water levels are continuously improved to maintain the peat condition wet, so that the risk of karhutla can be suppressed as much as possible.
KLH/BPLH also pays special attention to the aspect of openness of scientific data in climate change mitigation. At the location, the Minister of LH directly saw the operation of the GRK monitoring tower which serves to detect the rate of flow of carbon dioxide (CO₂) and methane (CH₄).
Hydrological and emission data collected in real time (real-time) become an important basis for KLH/BPLH in formulating sustainable land management strategies.
Responding to the importance of data and research in environmental management, the President Director of PT RAPP Sihol Aritonang emphasized the company's commitment to continue supporting the national environmental agenda.
"RAPP is committed to continuing to take part in supporting the national environmental agenda, including through sustainable peatland management and fire prevention efforts. We also support efforts to develop Indonesian research and science in the field of tropical peatland management, including emission measurement, as a basis for science-based management policies and practices," said Sihol.
Not only focusing on land, the KLH/BPLH working visit also emphasized the importance of a clean energy transition through a review of a solar panel installation with a total capacity of 50 MW. Uniquely, this renewable energy project utilizes a closed landfill area, a land optimization step in line with the principles of sustainable development.
