JAKARTA - German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced plans for Germany and Poland to push for the expansion of a NATO military fuel pipeline system to the Baltic states to supply fuel to the alliance's eastern flank.
"We are working together to expand the NATO pipeline system to the Baltic states," Pistorius said at a press conference in Warsaw after the signing of a German-Polish bilateral defense agreement.
Pistorius said the expansion of the military pipeline system was necessary for the defense capability and protection of the eastern wing.
"We want to ensure reliable fuel supplies are in the right place when they are really needed in a defensive situation," Pistorius said.
Previously, Poland and Germany signed a new military cooperation agreement that did not include joint security guarantees.
The document replaces the framework agreement on defense cooperation between the Polish and German governments that has been in force for 15 years.
In recent years, Russia has repeatedly expressed concern over unprecedented NATO activity near its western borders.
The Kremlin noted that Russia does not pose a threat to anyone, but will not ignore actions that could potentially harm its interests.
