JAKARTA - Croatian Prime Minister (PM) Andrej Plenkovic rejected Ukraine's simplification of its desire to join the European Union (EU) alias accession.

Plenkovic emphasized that all candidate countries for the EU accession procedure must meet the same requirements.

"If we abandon the concept of individual achievement for each country and implement a shortcut procedure, then there should be no short path for some countries and a long path for other countries," Plenkovic said, quoted by RIA Novosti, Thursday, May 28.

Plenkovic said Ukraine could not be rushed into the EU.

He also said that this would be discussed in the European Council meeting in June 2026.

On Tuesday, May 26, the Euractiv media reported that the EU hopes to begin direct negotiations on membership with Ukraine before the June 18-19 European Council summit.

The EU granted candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova in June 2022, while official accession negotiations began in June 2024 through the first intergovernmental conference in Luxembourg.

A number of European research institutions assess that Ukraine's accession process to the EU still requires further reforms and is expected to take place in the next few years.
