JAKARTA - Indonesia emphasized its active role as the Coordinator of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in the 2026 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference or NPT Review Conference (RevCon 2026), with the impasse and conference should not be an excuse to weaken nuclear disarmament.

As Coordinator of the GNB, Indonesia led the coordination of the position of 118 GNB member countries to encourage the implementation of the NPT that is balanced, credible, discriminatory, and consistent with the nuclear disarmament commitments that have been agreed in the previous review cycle.

The RevCon 2026, which was held at the UN Headquarters, New York from April 27 to May 22, 2026, took place amid increasing global nuclear risks. The Indonesian delegation at this conference was led by the Indonesian Permanent Representative to the UN in New York, Ambassador Umar Hadi.

More than 12,000 nuclear warheads are still maintained by a number of countries, while geopolitical tensions, modernization of nuclear arsenals, possible nuclear tests, increased development of nuclear-powered submarines, and the use of new technologies, including artificial intelligence in nuclear command and control systems, are increasing the risk of miscalculation, escalation, and use of nuclear weapons.

This is a real threat considering the use of nuclear weapons will bring disaster to humanity and the environment. Thus, nuclear disarmament is not an abstract agenda, but a real need for global peace, stability, and security.

In the negotiation process, Indonesia has played an active role in consolidating the position of non-bloc countries and maintaining the balance of the three pillars of the NPT: nuclear disarmament, non-proliferation, and the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

"Indonesia emphasizes that consensus should not be achieved at the expense of the substance of nuclear disarmament or lowering the standards of commitments that have been agreed upon," the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement, Monday (25/5).

At the closing session, Indonesia expressed disappointment that a consensus could not be reached on the substantive final document of the 2026 RevCon. Indonesia emphasized that non-nuclear-weapon states had carried out strict non-proliferation obligations under the NPT. Therefore, nuclear-weapon states must take concrete steps to implement nuclear disarmament obligations in accordance with Article VI of the NPT.

Indonesia also emphasizes the importance of ensuring the right of each state party to utilize nuclear energy for peaceful purposes without discrimination. Access to peaceful nuclear technology should not be restricted through political, selective, or discriminatory approaches, said the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The disagreement also showed that many state parties were not willing to accept results that could weaken nuclear disarmament commitments and standards that had been built in previous review cycles. Indonesia also expressed its appreciation to Vietnam as the Conference President for its leadership and efforts to keep the negotiation process inclusive and constructive amid complex dynamics.

Indonesia's leadership as the Coordinator of the GNB at the 2026 RevCon confirms Indonesia's diplomatic commitment to strengthening multilateralism, fighting for a nuclear-free world, and promoting a more just, inclusive, and international law-based global governance.

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that the disagreement of the 2026 RevCon should not be used as an excuse to weaken the commitment to nuclear disarmament.

On the contrary, it should be a warning that the nuclear risk is becoming more real, and an impetus to strengthen political will, build trust, and accelerate progress towards the NPT's ultimate goal, a world free of nuclear weapons.
