JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Legal, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra said the revision of the General Election Law (RUU Pemilu) is targeted to be completed in 2.5 years of President Prabowo Subianto's government.

Yusril explained that the target was set considering the preparations that needed to be made for the 2029 Election.

"Our target is that this bill will be completed by the time 2.5 years of this government, so that there is enough time to prepare for the election 2.5 years before it is held in 2029," he said as quoted by ANTARA, Wednesday, April 22.

He also reminded the potential for testing the law to the Constitutional Court (MK) after the Election Bill was passed.

"The court makes a cancellation or a new interpretation, sometimes it is surprising and it is not only troublesome for the government in terms of budget, in terms of security, but also troublesome for the KPU as the executor of the election in the field," he said.

Therefore, Yusril hopes that the discussion of the Election Bill can begin in mid-2026. However, this depends on the DPR because the initiative for revision comes from parliament.

"If the DPR has finished drafting it, it will be submitted to the President, and of course the President will issue a surprise (presidential letter) to appoint several ministers to discuss the bill," he said.

According to Yusril, the government is in the stage of anticipating the draft Election Bill from the DPR. Later, the government will submit a list of inventory of problems (DIM).

"And we are waiting for instructions from the President because there are several issues that are very crucial, in connection with several decisions from the Constitutional Court," said Yusril.

Previously, the Chairperson of the House of Representatives Puan Maharani when met at the parliament complex, Senayan, Jakarta, Thursday (16/4), said the Election Bill was still being discussed with the leaders of political parties.

Meanwhile, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Sufmi Dasco Ahmad said his party did not want to rush to discuss the Election Bill because it wanted the Election Law to be produced to be really good.

Dasco at the parliament complex, Tuesday (21/4), said the leadership of the DPR is asking political parties, both parliamentary and non-parliamentary, to simulate the election system to support the discussion of the bill.

In addition, he stated that the discussion of the Election Bill could not be rushed because there were already many MK decisions. Do not let the Election Bill be discussed in a hurry, but it will actually cause a lawsuit in the MK.

"We have been back and forth, the Election Law has been sued, the Constitutional Court has been canceled, the Constitutional Court has been decided, then the Constitutional Court has decided again, so this time, yes, please, we all have to be patient," he said.
