JAKARTA - Greenland Prime Minister (PM) Jens-Frederik Nielsen stated that the island has the potential to be the next target of the United States after Venezuela, following the reappearance of US President Donald Trump's desire to control Greenland.

"Greenland's people, many of them think like that, 'we may be next', and I know other countries think the same; and that is very unfortunate," Nielsen told broadcaster NBC, as reported by ANTARA from Sputnik/RIA Novosti-OANA, Thursday, April 16.

Nielsen said Trump's desire to own or control Greenland has raised concerns among residents, especially during the latest escalation, to the point that some are hesitant to leave their children in kindergarten and cancel planned parties and meetings.

"Many people feel unsafe. Some feel afraid. Now, for many, that feeling is turning to anger," Nielsen said.

He also stressed that Greenland would not be handed over or sold to any foreign power.

"If they do something to our infrastructure, then of course we have to be ready," he said.

Nielsen also expressed uncertainty about whether the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) would defend Greenland if necessary.

"I don't know if NATO will give guarantees to fight for us against other allies. We are all still allies," he said.

Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark. However, Trump has repeatedly stated that the island should join the United States on the grounds of strategic interests for US national security.

The Danish and Greenlandic governments have warned Washington against trying to take over the territory, stressing that territorial integrity must be respected.
