Minister of Human Rights Urges Independent Investigation of Shooting in Central Papua Peak

JAKARTA - Human Rights Minister Natalius Pigai has urged an independent investigation into the shooting incident in Kemburu District, Puncak Regency, Central Papua, which killed five civilians, including children, to ensure disclosure of facts and accountability.

According to Pigai, the investigation step by the National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) is crucial to provide clarity in the midst of limited official information circulating.

"Komnas HAM must immediately go down to investigate," he said, quoted by ANTARA, Thursday, April 16.

In addition, Pigai also asked the TNI to immediately provide clarification on the incident as part of the transparency of handling conflicts that have an impact on civilians.

"Due to the incident in Puncak Regency which killed people and other losses suffered by civilians, I ask the TNI to immediately provide clarification. Due to the fall of the victims, including children and infants, I express my deep concern and sorrow. There should be no civilian casualties in the conflict between the TNI and the OPM TPN," he said firmly.

He emphasized that armed conflict should not sacrifice civilians, so that protection of the community must be the top priority in every security operation.

In this context, Pigai also encourages the temporary suspension of military operations in areas that could potentially affect civilians, especially in refugee areas.

"We ask for a temporary cessation of all military operations in areas that could potentially affect civilians, especially in refugee areas. Protection of civilians must be the top priority," he said.

According to him, this incident once again shows the importance of applying the principles of international humanitarian law in every operation, especially to ensure that there are no violations of the rights of civilians.

He added that if the Kemburu District is a safe zone, then military activities in the area must be a serious concern and thoroughly evaluated.

Pigai considers the strengthening of the investigation and transparency mechanisms to be an important step to prevent the recurrence of violence against civilians in the conflict in Papua.
