JAKARTA - Dozens of US Congress members from the Democratic Party are calling for the impeachment or removal of Donald Trump from his position as President of the US after threatening Iran with the open intention of violating international humanitarian law.

They called for Trump's removal on Tuesday local time after the US President used extreme war rhetoric against Iran, including threatening to destroy "the whole civilization".

NBC News reported that Democratic lawmakers on Capitol Hill supported Trump's impeachment and removal through the 25th Amendment, even after the US-Iran announced a ceasefire.

Those supporting Trump's impeachment or removal of Trump, including several senators, said in their respective social media posts that the Trump Cabinet needed to invoke the 25th Amendment to the Constitution.

They also said Trump was unfit to serve as US head of state, the Congress should impeach and convict him, or both.

"The House and Senate must reconvene. The House must pass the articles of impeachment, and then the Senate must vote to convict and remove the President. Or, the cabinet and Vice President, with the consent of Congress, must use the 25th Amendment and remove Trump," Senator Ed Markey, D-Mass wrote in his statement via his X account.

Senator Chris Murphy, D-Conn. said he agreed with calls to use the 25th Amendment against Trump. "No sane President would publicly pledge to destroy an entire civilization," he said.

"We need to use the 25th Amendment and remove Trump. Threatening with war crimes is a blatant violation of our constitution and the Geneva Convention," said Congressman Ro Khanna, D-Calif. on Tuesday morning local time via his X account.

Khanna reiterated his intention to Trump on Tuesday night during an interview session with MS NOW. "We need to use all options [to remove Trump]," he added.

The US lawmakers' posts came shortly after Trump threatened Iran in a post on the Truth Social social media on Tuesday morning. At that time, Trump said that "the whole civilization" of Iran could be destroyed if Iran did not reach an agreement with the US before the deadline of 20.00 on Tuesday night, April 7 local time.

Trump's rhetoric triggered outrage from the US Democratic Party, even criticism from a number of Republican members who said that the threat was tantamount to a war crime.

The United Nations (UN) then reacted via its X account by warning about the Geneva Convention. The UN added that "war has rules."

Separately, UN Secretary-General António Guterres, without naming Trump, said that "no military objective" justified "the massive destruction of civilian infrastructure or the deliberate suffering of the civilian population."

Less than 90 minutes before the deadline for Trump's version of Iran's destruction at 20.00, the property billionaire who became the 47th US President suspended the US attack on Iran for two weeks. Trump announced that the US and Iran had agreed to a two-week ceasefire.

However, it turns out that the intentions of many Democratic Party cadres in the US are not receding. They actually further strengthened their stance after the ceasefire agreement took place, by still arguing that Trump should no longer serve as President of the US.

"Regardless of a temporary or not a temporary ceasefire, Trump has committed impeachable offenses," Rep. Seth Moulton, D-Mass. said on his X account, Wednesday, April 8 local time.

The Democratic senator also asked that members of the US Congress return to Capitol Hill from their recess to process Trump's extreme war rhetoric in the form of impeachment or dismissal.

"Congress needs to get back to work and remove him from office before he does more damage to our country and the world," Seth Moulton continued.

Trump is known to have been impeached twice during his first term. However, the effort was acquitted by the Republican-led Senate.
