JAKARTA - Acting President of Venezuela Delcy Rodríguez stated that the lifting of sanctions by the United States against him was a step towards normalizing bilateral relations.
The US Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced the removal of Rodríguez's name from the sanctions list.
On the X platform, Rodríguez said US President Donald Trump's decision was a significant step towards normalizing and strengthening relations between the two countries.
"We believe that this progress and determination will eventually lead to the lifting of additional active sanctions against our country. This will allow for the acceleration of economic development, investment, as well as effective bilateral cooperation for the benefit of the peoples of both countries," he said as quoted by ANTARA from Sputnik, Thursday, April 2.
The United States and Venezuela restored diplomatic relations in March after being severed since 2019.
On January 3, US forces arrested then-President of Venezuela Nicolas Maduro and his wife, and brought them both to New York. Trump stated that they would be tried for alleged "narcoterrorism" and considered a threat.
After Maduro was arrested, the Venezuelan Supreme Court transferred the duties of the head of state to Vice President Delcy Rodríguez, who was then sworn in as acting president on January 5.
Since then, the two countries have taken a number of steps to thaw long-fraught relations.
