JAKARTA - Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Yogyakarta on July 8, 2026 to support the restoration efforts of Prambanan Temple as part of his visit to Indonesia starting July 6, 2026.

"Regarding Yogyakarta, he visited because, if you look at the 2025 Joint Statement, the two leaders (India and Indonesia) have agreed that India will support the restoration of Prambanan Temple," said Indian Ambassador to Indonesia Sandeep Chakravorty at a press conference at the Indian Embassy in Jakarta on Friday, July 3, reported ANTARA.

Ambassador Chakravorty said that since the joint statement, India has been working with the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Indonesia, the Indonesian Heritage Institute, and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to strengthen the restoration of the temple.

ASI is one of the few organizations in the world that has expertise in the restoration of ancient temples and monuments. ASI, he continued, has successfully been involved in the restoration of Angkor Wat, Cambodia and is currently also working on similar projects in Laos and Vietnam.

"The ASI team has come to Indonesia, reviewed the temple, and compiled a project report which is currently in the evaluation stage. We believe that when the two leaders meet, they will announce the start of the restoration work on the temple," said Chakravorty.

According to the Ambassador, Yogyakarta is a very strong destination for tourism because it has various attractions.

"If the temple is successfully restored, I believe it will attract tourists from around the world, including from India. I see this as part of the plan to develop other tourist destinations in Indonesia," continued the Ambassador.

PM Modi is scheduled to arrive in Jakarta on July 6 evening. Then on July 7, Modi will start the state agenda by attending a bilateral meeting with President Prabowo Subianto which will be followed by a state banquet and is scheduled to deliver a speech to the participants.

In the evening, the Indian Prime Minister will also give a speech to the Indian community in Indonesia.

On July 8, Modi will continue his visit to Yogyakarta before departing for Australia.

According to Ambassador Chakravorty, the visit is part of efforts to strengthen India's strategic relations with key partner countries in the Indo-Pacific region, including Indonesia.

The visit will focus on strengthening a number of pillars of cooperation, namely the defense and security sector, the trade and investment sector, the food and energy security sector, the downstream and development of critical minerals, and capacity building in the fields of health and education.

The last visit of PM Modi to Indonesia took place in 2023 when he attended the India-ASEAN Summit.
