DKI Provincial Government Has Not Uncovered the Pac-Man Zebra Cross in Tebet, While Preparing Standardization

JAKARTA - The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government (Pemprov) has not dismantled the zebra cross with the Pac-Man game character on Jalan Soepomo, Tebet, South Jakarta, which went viral on social media. The painting action was previously carried out by residents voluntarily.

Deputy Special Staff Coordinator for the Governor of DKI Jakarta Yustinus Prastowo said that for the time being, the zebra cross will be maintained as a form of appreciation for the residents' initiative.

"Without reducing respect for it, there are plans to standardize. But for those who have now been made by residents as a form of appreciation, we will let it go first. Well yesterday in Supomo there were five sections, there were five Zebra Crosses. The four were completed. Yesterday one was painted by residents, we will let it go first," said Prastowo to reporters, Wednesday, April 1.

The DKI Provincial Government also opened a space for dialogue with parties involved in the creation of the unique zebra cross. In the near future, the DKI Provincial Government will invite residents who made the zebra cross to exchange ideas.

"Later we will also invite content creators, people who have ideas for us to involve. There must be other public spaces that can be supported," said Prastowo.

However, Prastowo emphasized that in the future all road crossing facilities must follow the applicable standards. The rearrangement will be carried out thoroughly so that there will be no repeated work.

He also explained the reason for the need for regulation in the design of zebra cross, including consideration of the safety aspects of road users.

"Why is there a regulation? Yes, we are normal people, sorry, maybe we are, but there is one place, for example, where the 3D image is made. That is, if a person with a spatial disorder can fall when seeing an object like that. Well, this is why it needs to be standardized," he said.

Previously, the Governor of DKI Jakarta Pramono Anung responded to the action of residents who made a zebra cross voluntarily and decorated with the Pac-Man game character on Jalan Prof. Dr. Soepomo, Tebet, South Jakarta.

Pramono appreciated the creativity of the community who had the initiative to draw their own road crossing facilities that were previously empty on the side of the road. However, Pramono emphasized that the installation of zebra cross has its own rules.

"For the zebra cross, the creativity of the residents, I thank you. It's just that the zebra cross also has its own rules. In my opinion, this is a positive creativity, so that what is now happening on the field we perfect again," said Pramono at the DKI Jakarta City Hall, Tuesday, March 31.

Pramono emphasized that the DKI Provincial Government would restore the provision of zebra cross at the location in accordance with the applicable provisions.

"We return to the rules that have been regulated for zebra crossings. It does have rules and it applies nationally, not only nationally, internationally. We appreciate the creative friends, but we have to return this to what has become the rules about zebra crossings," said Pramono.
