JAKARTA - US President Donald Trump said NATO allies have become "much better" after the US criticized their reluctance to help open the Strait of Hormuz blockade amid US and Israeli military attacks against Iran.

Earlier this week, Trump said the US did not need help from NATO partners and other allies, including Australia, Japan, and South Korea, in its conflict with Iran.

Trump also accused allies of not wanting to help and compared the alliance to a "one-way street."

"And in the case of NATO, they don't want to help us defend the Strait [of Hormuz], even though they are the ones who need it," Trump told reporters ahead of his meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi at the White House, reported by ANTARA from Sputnik, Friday, March 20.

"But now they are much better because they see my attitude, they are much better," he added.

On February 28, the US and Israel launched an attack on a number of targets in Iran, including in Tehran, causing damage and casualties among civilians.

Iran retaliated by attacking Israeli territory and US military facilities in the Middle East.

Escalation around Iran has led to the suspension of traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, which is the main route for the shipment of oil and liquefied natural gas from Persian Gulf countries to global markets, and affects oil exports and production in the region.
