JAKARTA - The Ministry of Environment (KLH) reminds local governments (Pemda) to prepare for an increase in waste generation in their respective regions during the 2026 Lebaran holiday period.
The Minister of LH/Head of the Environment Control Agency (BPLH) Hanif Faisol Nurofi said the Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub) estimated that around 143.91 million people would go home for Eid and return to their hometowns this year.
"There are about 143 million shifts of people from big cities to regions. This means that the waste that arises in one day can be multiplied by 0.5 kilograms," said Minister of LH Hanif as reported by ANTARA, Tuesday, March 17.
He explained that the garbage generated in areas such as Jakarta will shift to destinations for homecoming that have facilities and processing capabilities in each region.
"We have ordered, asked the mayors and regents as the main waste managers to immediately respond to this," said Minister of LH HanifFaisolNurofiq.
He reminded all rules related to waste management were owned and asked that the local government follow them according to the provisions.
Previously, the Ministry of Transportation predicted that the peak of the 2026 Lebaran homecoming flow would occur on Wednesday (18/3) with an estimate of community movement on that day could reach 21.97 million people.
Nationally, the Ministry of Transportation's Transportation Policy Agency (Baketrans) survey showed that as many as 143.92 million people plan to travel during the 1447 Hijriah/2026 Eid al-Fitr holiday period.
"This figure is indeed down 1.75 percent compared to the survey in 2025 of around 146 million. However, in the realization of 2025, it actually reached 154 million. This means that people's mobility during the Eid holiday tends to exceed the survey figure," said Minister of Transportation (Menhub) Dudy Purwagandhi in the Plenary Cabinet Meeting, Friday (13/3)
In terms of transportation modes, the Minister of Transportation Dudy said that private cars were predicted to still be the main choice with 76.24 million commuters, followed by motorcycles and buses.
