JAKARTA - Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin said the prospective aircraft carrier of the Indonesian Navy, Giuseppe Garibaldi, will be modified according to Indonesia's defense needs at the domestic shipyard, PT. Penataran Angkatan Laut (PAL).

"Insyaallah Garibaldi will come to Indonesia in 2026 but we will clean it up because we have an industry, PT PAL, capable of cleaning it up (the aircraft carrier)," said Sjafrie, quoted by ANTARA, Thursday, March 12.

However, Sjafrie did not explain in detail what parts would be modified from the aircraft carrier.

He only ensured that his party had prepared a budget to modify the ship at PT. PAL.

"For the budget, ask the Director General of Renhan (Defense Planning), yes. But I decided, so if you say it is efficient, effective, I am ready," he explained.

Previously, the Head of the Defense Information and Public Relations Bureau (Karo Humas Infohan) of the General Secretariat of the Ministry of Defense, Brigadier General TNI Rico Ricardo Sirait, said that Indonesia was planned to receive the first aircraft carrier, Giuseppe Garibaldi, as a grant from the Italian government.

The ship, built by Italian shipyard Fincantieri, has previously been used to support the Italian navy.

Rico continued, the grant does not mean that the Ministry of Defense does not spend a penny.

"Giuseppe Garibaldi is a grant from the Italian Government. The budget prepared by the Indonesian government is allocated for the needs of retrofit or adjustment to meet the operational needs of the Indonesian Navy," said Rico when contacted by ANTARA in Jakarta, Friday (13/2).

Until now, the negotiation and administrative process is still ongoing between the Indonesian Ministry of Defense and the Italian party.

After the negotiation process and the completion of administrative procedures, the Indonesian Navy will adjust the technology of the aircraft carrier to suit the needs of the TNI.
