JAKARTA - The 10th and 12th vice presidents of the Republic of Indonesia, Jusuf Kalla (JK), said that efforts to create world peace must be based on justice and supported by mastery of science and technology.

Kalla quoted a hadith of the Prophet Muhammad SAW that reconciling parties in conflict is a more important act than salat and fasting sunnah. This shows how important peace is in human life.

"The Prophet said that the highest charity is to reconcile people who are at odds," he said while giving a Tarawih sermon at the Gadjah Mada University Campus Mosque, Yogyakarta, Thursday (5/3) evening, as stated by ANTARA, Friday, March 6.

Kalla explained that conflicts generally arise due to various factors, ranging from injustice, political and social issues, territorial disputes, ideology, to religion and the scramble for natural resources.

He assessed that injustice was the biggest cause of conflict, including in Indonesia. In Indonesian history, there have been at least 15 major conflicts, most of which were triggered by the perceived injustice of the public towards government policies.

"Of the approximately 15 major conflicts in Indonesia, nine of them occur because of injustice," he said.

Kalla also highlighted the global conflicts currently taking place in countries with a Muslim majority. According to him, the situation is ironic because Islamic teachings emphasize the importance of peace.

In addition, he alluded to the dynamics of international conflicts, including between Iran and the United States-Israel. Modern wars are no longer determined by the number of troops, but by the mastery of military technology such as rockets, drones, and advanced weapon systems.

"The war now is not about how many soldiers, but who controls the technology," he said.

Therefore, Kalla emphasized the importance of developing science and technology in the university environment. Campus has a strategic role in creating innovations that can strengthen the progress of the nation.

He also touched on Indonesia's role in maintaining world peace, as stated in the opening of the Indonesian constitution to carry out world order based on independence, lasting peace, and social justice.

According to Kalla, Indonesia has long contributed to peace diplomacy, one of which is through the idea of the first president of the Republic of Indonesia, Soekarno, who initiated the 1955 Asian-African Conference in Bandung.

Kalla also shared his experience in resolving conflicts in Indonesia, including the conflict in Ambon which was successfully stopped through peaceful negotiations which later became known as the Malino Agreement.

He said that the approach of dialogue, courage, and understanding religion correctly is the key to stopping violence between conflicting groups. "Conflict can be stopped if we understand the root of the problem and are willing to sit down together to find solutions," he said.

Through this tausiah, Kalla invited the public, especially academics and students, to play an active role in creating peace and developing science for the progress of the nation.
