Police Process Law for Members who Shoot Teenagers in Makassar

JAKARTA - The National Police stated that the handling of the shooting case that killed an 18-year-old teenager named Betrand Eka Prasetyo by a police officer from the Panakkukang Police, initials Iptu N, on Sunday, March 1, 2026, is now handled by the Makassar Police.

Head of the Public Information Bureau (Karopenmas) of the National Police Public Relations Division, Brigjen Pol Truno Yudho Andhiko, said the Makassar Police had taken firm action by prosecuting the perpetrators. Currently, the members involved have been named suspects and detained.

"Firm steps have been taken by the Makassar Police. The person concerned has been named a suspect and is currently in the process of detention," he told the media at the Bareskrim Polri Building, National Police Headquarters, South Jakarta, Thursday, March 5, 2026.

In addition to the criminal process, said Truno, the National Police will also process the person concerned through the code of ethics for the profession.

"Then in line with that, of course, the code of ethics will also be carried out by the person concerned," he added.

It is known that the incident occurred when Bertrand and his colleagues were reported by residents for playing a water jelly toy gun until they closed the road access.

After receiving the report, Iptu N who was at the location tried to disperse the action of the teenagers and secured Bertrand.

According to police, when he was about to be secured, Bertrand tried to wriggle out of the officer's grip. After that, Iptu N's gun accidentally exploded and hit the victim's back.

Truno explained that the victim had been taken to a medical facility for further treatment. However, the victim's life was not saved. The police then conducted an autopsy before the body was handed over to the family.

"The steps that have been taken by the South Sulawesi Police and the Makassar Police, the first of which was of course when the deceased was immediately taken to a medical facility for further treatment. However, we all know, we also mourn," he said.

Furthermore, in response to the possibility of evaluating the use of firearms by police officers, Truno said that the analysis and evaluation process was always carried out in every operational activity of the police.

According to him, the evaluation is carried out from the planning stage, implementation until after the activity takes place, including in the aspect of management supervision and technical function training.

"The evaluation process is carried out at any time. In every operational activity and police training, there is always analysis and evaluation," he explained.

At the end of his statement, Truno also expressed his condolences for the incident. He said the National Police was also concerned and sympathized with the victim's family for the incident that befell the teenager.

"We are also saddened by this incident. We are all concerned. The National Police Chief has also paid attention," he concluded.
