JAKARTA - The Papua Provincial Government (Pemprov) will immediately build five apartment units (rusun) and renovate 2,100 units of houses in March 2026 as part of accelerating the fulfillment of decent housing for the community.

"The provincial government has begun to realize the construction of flats and house renovations. Physical work began in March 2026 with an allocation of around 2,100 units of house renovation assistance, and five units of flats," said Papua Governor Mathius D Fakhiri in Jayapura, Thursday, February 26, reported by ANTARA.

The Governor of Papua said that the program was a follow-up to the results of the Coordination Meeting for the Acceleration of Housing and Residential Area Development with the central government in Jakarta.

He also explained that the five apartment units to be built are planned to be located in Jayapura City, Jayapura Regency, and Keerom Regency.

"The construction of vertical housing is a solution to answer the increasing housing needs in urban areas," he said.

According to the governor, the high demand for houses in Papua is also influenced by the social and cultural conditions of the community, where one house can be inhabited by several generations in one family.

"Data shows that the housing needs in Papua are quite high. Therefore, the provincial government is committed to accelerating the realization of subsidized housing assistance programs, home renovations, to the development of residential areas through various schemes," he said again.

He added that the acceleration of housing development is part of the commitment of the local government to improve the quality of life of the community as well as supporting national programs in the housing sector.

"We hope that collaboration between the central and regional governments can ensure that people's basic needs, especially boards, are met gradually and sustainably," he said.
