JAKARTA - The Mexican government sent humanitarian aid in the form of food and basic necessities to Cuba using two naval ships.

"Humanitarian aid was sent to the Republic of Cuba by the logistics ships Papaloapan and Isla Holbox, which transported more than 814 tons of food for the civilian population on the island," the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in its announcement, as reported by Sputnik, Monday, February 9.

The two ships departed from the Port of Veracruz on February 8. The Papaloapan ship carried about 536 tons of food and basic necessities, including liquid milk, meat products, rice, nuts, biscuits, canned tuna and sardines, vegetable oil, and personal hygiene products.

Meanwhile, the Isla Holbox ship is carrying more than 277 tons of powdered milk intended for humanitarian needs. The voyage is expected to take about four days.

The Mexican government also announced that additional aid was being prepared, in the form of more than 1,500 tons of powdered milk and nuts for Cuba.

The assistance was given at the direction of Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and reflects the humanitarian principles and traditions of solidarity of the Mexican people.

On January 29, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order authorizing the US to impose tariffs on goods from countries that sell or supply oil to Cuba.

Trump also declared a state of emergency on the grounds of a threat to national security that he said came from Havana.

After the supply of oil to Cuba from Venezuela stopped, Mexico became the largest supplier of fuel to the island. However, shipments from Mexico to Cuba were also stopped due to the measures taken by the US government.

Sheinbaum explained that oil supplies to Cuba were carried out through commercial contracts and humanitarian aid, but President Donald Trump's executive order made the continuation of the shipment uncertain, because the Mexican government did not want to harm its own people.

He emphasized that the government is trying to resolve this issue through diplomatic channels.
