JAKARTA - The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government carries out weather modification operations (OMC) routinely to anticipate potential extreme weather at the beginning of the year. DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said that the implementation of OMC is now not only focused on the Jakarta area, but also reaches the Jabodetabek buffer area.

"We actually also do it at the border. Because there is a possibility for a few days, both in Tangerang, South Tangerang, then in Bogor, in Bekasi, the rainfall is high," said Pramono in North Jakarta, Tuesday, January 27.

Pramono assessed that weather modification would not be effective if it was only carried out in Jakarta. This is because the capital's flooding is often triggered by water shipments from upstream areas that cause rivers to overflow.

"It's useless to work only on Jakarta then we get a pretty big shipment. So it's done as a whole. But the main focus is Jakarta," he said.

According to him, the main purpose of the OMC is to reduce the impact of heavy rainfall so that it does not trigger flooding again, as happened a few days ago.

The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government also decided to extend the implementation of OMC for one full month, following the high potential of rain until early February. Pramono revealed that the budget for the implementation of OMC for one month had been prepared together with the DKI Jakarta DPRD.

"The DKI Jakarta government together with the DKI Jakarta DPRD has indeed allocated its budget for a full month. So if it is still needed, we will conduct OMC," said Pramono.

The implementation of OMC itself has started since mid-January and was previously extended until January 27. Pramono said the impact of the operation was quite felt on the weather conditions in Jakarta.

"If this morning at 07.00 we did not raise the OMC, the weather would be different from what we feel now," he said.

The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government, continued Pramono, continues to monitor weather developments based on data from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG). From the results of the monitoring, OMC is considered still relevant to be carried out until early February.

"The results of BMKG are that now there is a possibility that by February 1 the weather needs to be OMC," said Pramono.
